WINTER 2008

Welcome to the Winter edition of Tiger Eye, the latest quarterly newsletter now incorporating news from both our Temporary and Permanent Divisions!

This newsletter features tips on jobseeking and the importance of online technology and a glimpse at the wide variety of temporary and permanent roles currently available through Tiger Recruitment.

Tiger News

Times are tough at the moment, but we're still busy with roles coming in from an increasing variety of clients. We're currently working on an exciting range of top-level positions, from supporting successful entrepreneurs to famous names within the music industry. Our operations in the United Arab Emirates are going from strength to strength, forging an increasing number of close connections with Clients in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. (In fact, the office has been so busy that Tiger has just taken on a new addition to the team to help relieve the pressure.)

So although things can seem bleak at the moment, don't despair. In a recent report published by Encore Personnel Services 86% of surveyed companies stated that they would continue to have openings for temporary staff - and that this would not be affected by the minimum wage increasing next April. 47% of companies anticipated that they would recruit the same number of staff in 2009 as 2008. According to recent research by Hay's Senior Finance, in the last two months there has even been a rise in the number of people recruited into the financial industry.

Get Online: Virtual Jobhunting

Online communication is becoming an ever more essential part of recruitment and your Internet skills need to be up to scratch. It is essential that you read the job description in full before applying to any position as this enables the Consultant to take your application seriously! In the present market clients are particularly specific in terms of their individual requirements, which are stated in our adverts, and we would therefore ask you only apply if you have the experience required.

  • When applying for a role, email your CV to us as a Word document. Make sure it's updated regularly and take care over the formatting so that your skills and experience are expressed in the clearest and neatest way possible. Here at Tiger we run a paperless office, with all candidate profiles stored on our secure database. Job applications are conducted digitally and correspondence with clients takes place via email and phone. Printed CVs are a thing of the past!
  • There are a lot of job sites out there which can help you with your search. Secs and the City, Clearly Secretarial and Office Recruit are all updated daily with a huge range of top-level secretarial roles. Times Online Jobs and Guardian Jobs are rapidly taking over from their broadsheet counterparts, providing the opportunity to keep listings constantly up-to-date. The Internet also offers a wealth of job boards and CV databases which allow candidates to create free profiles and browse available vacancies.
  • A word of warning, however: some sites may pass on your CV to other companies without your knowledge and consent, and others will send out automated applications to any roles which your CV seems to match. This can backfire badly as it may result in duplicate applications being made for the same role through different routes, which can make you seem desperate and indiscriminating to a potential employer. At Tiger we pledge to always seek a candidate's consent before putting you forward for a role, and in general we advise using trusted agencies to represent you rather than anonymous websites.
  • Many aspects of jobseeking are now conducted online - not only applications, but skills testing such as typing or MS Office are now emailed to you remotely for you to complete online on your home PC. Many companies also rely on online aptitude tests and psychometric assessment as part of the recruitment process. Even if you don't have Internet access at home, you would do well to spend some time at an Internet cafe or your local library to familiarise yourself with this software, so that you can take any online tests recruiters might send you in your stride. UK Recruiter offers a list of free testing suppliers if you want to glance over the sorts of tests on offer to recruiters and get some practice.
  • Interview Gold offers a new job interview skills course, in the form of an online interactive system which anticipates - with an 80% accuracy rate - the likeliest questions to be asked by employers in a range of industries. The service offers interview preparation for candidates in the form of skills training, videos of sample interviews and interactive practice interviews. Until the end of November, Interview Gold is offering a 20% discount on its services for candidates - click here to take advantage of this offer.

Beware of the Cowboys

If you've registered with us recently you may have received a confidentiality agreement for you to sign. In this fragile market, we are hearing of an increasing number of incidents concerning the behavior of a number of "rogue" agencies behaving unscrupulously.

For example, agencies are sending candidates' CVs to clients without their prior permission, in addition to using candidates' confidential information to source a list of clients to whom their CVs have been sent. These agencies will then resend your CV to roles you've already applied for, or bombard clients with applications for the position that you may be interviewing for.

Whichever way you look at it, the candidate loses out and we receive a call from a frustrated client!

At Tiger Recruitment, we promise you that we will never send your CV to a client without your prior permission. All we ask in return is that you not release the name of any client, or the details of any position that one of our consultants has spoken to you about.
