Hiring A Business Assistant

A Business Assistant works closely alongside the Director and management team, attending key meetings with them as well as overseeing the general business activity. More often than not, they’ll be the right-hand person to the Director and will manage key projects, offer valuable business insights, and assist with budget management / reporting.

They may perform some Personal Assistant duties for the Director as well, including diary management and extensive travel / meeting coordination. As a flexible and confident business leader, they will likely provide line management to the Administration and Operations Managers, conducting staff appraisals, performance issues and task delegation.

The responsibilities from one Business Assistant to another may vary significantly depending on the nature and size of the organisation. For this reason, it’s crucial to carefully consider a candidate’s background experience alongside their potential cultural fit. What was expected of them in previous positions? Did they work independently or as part of a team? In what capacity did they support the business leaders? All these questions are significant in determining a candidate’s best fit for you.

Our assessment of Business Assistant candidates will cover the above plus their technical capabilities and MS Office skillset. We’ll look at their managerial experience, their leadership style, and pose behavioural questions around initiative and proactivity.

When we recruit Business Assistants, we look at a number of key competencies, namely:

  • High level of initiative
  • Strong project management skills

We assess these areas thoroughly and deeply, so that you’re assured each candidate on your shortlist will have the skills and competence to fulfil the requirements of the role.
