First impressions count – and your CV is the first impression that a potential employer will get before they decide if they would like to meet you in person for an interview. So presenting a successful CV is crucial to the success or failure of your job application.
Employers won’t always have the time to carefully read through and consider all details provided in every single CV they receive – And in reality, with an inbox of hundreds to get through, they’ll need you to ensure that your CV is straight to the point and easy to read. A confusing CV with an illegible font, missing information or a messy layout sometimes won’t stand a good chance up against a CV that is well presented and professional looking.
Make sure you provide the basics. Include your name and contact details at the top, a short personal profile and longer sections covering your work experience, education and/or training, other skills and references. The information in each section should be in reverse-chronological order, with the most recent first. Use a web-friendly font in an easily readable size. Keep the layout clean and simple with correct use of white space, headings, and bolding and bullet points. And make sure you check for spelling mistakes, typos and grammar.
Selling your skills – it is also feasible to sell yourself through your key achievements and successes, rather than simply listing your responsibilities. By demonstrating how you can add value to the department and wider company you will gain the attention of a potential employer. Similarly, talk about what you were personally responsible for rather than talking broadly about what your team may have achieved together.
